So as you probably could tell from all my goals, I'm seeking to get it all together for myself at a young age so they develop to be healthy (and automatic) habits as I get older.
I REALLY appreciate all the comments you all leave about my organization in my goals! Especially I used to lack organization. Very badly. I had receipts for purchases from months before. My financials were anybody's guess. Yeah, I know about 80% of Americans can't tell you how much they've spent for the week, much less for the month. But just because it's a majority doesn't mean I wanted to be there lol.
So basically I'm working on two pretenses:
- Concentrate with fervor on the things that'll enrich my life.
- If at first I'm not good at something, make success inevitable until I get to it.
An example of the latter is my saving/spending patterns. My bookkeeping isn't so good since I'd normally overestimate how much I have for savings (despite keeping clean records on Excel!). It was frustrating, but obviously I couldn't give up on controlling my finances. I had to make success inevitable.
So I got a Mint account to help me track all my spending and followed the automatic savings plans from "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi. Despite his cheeky (and sometimes try-hard) humor, he's got a lot of good points to make about automating finances to make success inevitable. This was just what I needed. I've saved up a nice emergency fund AND have started saving for future goals.
And best of all, I only need to manage my funds for about an hour every week. So I can spend my time doing whatever else I want/need to do. Very cool :)
I think my finances are pretty solid and my plan is robust, so I'll be moving to a new apartment in the next week. I sure hope the move goes smoothly. Yeah, I know I could save loads if I just lived at home and could use the money to pay off student loans (I have no credit card debt), but I know that's essentially living with a crutch. I worked out the numbers, know I'm going to be fine, and so I see this as a step towards my own independence.
Godspeed.
