Posted about Stay cigarette free.:
What helped me finally to kick the habit was realizing that I had to (a) overcome the physical aspect of my body being addicted to nicotine and (b) overcome the mental aspect of smoking (my triggers). In order to deal with both aspects, I chose to wind down my habit over several weeks by doing two things: (1) cut my intake down weekly over 8 weeks to gradually wean my body off the nicotine (for I was smoker for 20+ years). I start out at 15 cigarettes a day for the first week, then reduced my daily smoking by 2 cigarettes a week. So by week 8, I was down to only smoking 2 cigarettes a day... then I went cold turkey. (2) What helped me cut down my daily intake (and stick with it) was becoming aware of the things/ situations that triggered my desire to smoke … and then I tried to minimize my exposure to them while I wound the habit down. For example, I was a very social smoker, so I laid low and did not go to any parties for while. At work, I would go and take a break and smoke "to clear my head". So, I replaced that with going outside, sitting on a bench and eating a piece of fruit. And too much caffeine ignited my urge big time.. so I would keep it to 2 cups of coffee a day max and drink water instead. And, I started exercising to help relief the stress of everyday life instead of lighting up. What I learned from the experience is that habits (good or bad) tend to serve needs for us. So, I never try to eliminate a bad habit without replacing it with a good habit(s). All that said, no matter how you choose to get there, stay strong in your conviction to quit for good health is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. For good health gives us the stamina and vitality to go and accomplish our hopes and aspirations. Wishing you the best on this important goal!
